Can You Make A Living From Shareware
MacSlash is dicussing whether or not you can make money from shareware.. This is always an interesting thing to read about as I'm not really sure that there is such a thing as shareware anymore. It seems NetNewsWire is often brought up as an axample of a successful shareware app, however it's not shareware it's just commercial software from a really small developer. It seems that software sold only online is now being equated with shareware. I think the lines are really blurred. After all is Microsoft Office shareware because you can get a free demo? That's exactly what you get with most software that is sold only online. For me I don't even remember the last time I bought a piece of software in a store, well at least software that wasn't a game. I always buy online, and now, most of the time it's from little one or two person companies. In fact, in my opinion, all the most interesting software for Mac OS X is coming out of little companies. Five years from now some of these little companies won't be do little anymore.
