A thousand birds

I don't know what it is, but for some reason today the tree outside my office is full of thousands of birds all merrily singing away and making a real racket. It's strange, I've actually never seen so many birds around here before. What's really strange is that every once in a while they all stop signing at once. One second it's massive bird singing racket, bam next second complete silence.
