Digital SLR race heating up with Nikon D2X - Photography

Wow, it looks like the digital SLR race is really starting to heat up. Canon just started shipping the EOS 20D which set a new standard for a prosumer level SLR with increased resolution and vastly improved handling. Pentax has announced a new, even smaller SLR then the *ist D called the *istDS(someone please fire whoever comes up with these names), Minolta finally released some real details about their first Digital SLR the Maxxum 7D with built in anti-shake that works with any lens.

The real kicker so far though, it looks like Nikon is about to take the wraps off the Nikon D2X. There's been a little informationleaking out, but now there's a brochure that looks pretty real. If it's real, it looks to be a killer camera. I love the idea of having a 12MP native resolution that can be dialed down to 6MP to get faster speed while still being able to shoot RAW. It looks like Nikon is giving you all the speed of the D2H, (with more resolution) in a body that also has the ability to rival the resolution of the Canon 1Ds. All I can say is sweet! I'm sure the price will be fun, but it's good to see some real thinking going into these (rumored) new cameras to raise the bar. Hopefully it's real and Canon will have something similar by the time I'm ready for a new camera.

Of course it's also possible that this could be a very elaborate spoof, rumors are fun.

Update: The D2X is now officially announced. What's interesting is it has a CMOS sensor instead of a CCD like previous Nikon DSLRs and therein lies what may be a serious flaw as a sports camera, it maxes out at ISO 800.
