Flatland - Photography

I've posted a lot of BMX pictures on this site, but they've all been people doing crazy crap off ramps. If you've ever wondered why I post so much BMX, it's not because I ride. It's because I used to ride, a loooong time ago, so it was easy to make connections with some of the older riders. However, when I rode I didn't do any of this ramp stuff, I rode the way that takes real skill, I rode flatland.

Unfortunately, flatland is a declining form for the sport. It takes a tremendous amount of practice to become good and most current riders have more balls then brains. They can huck them selves off ramps and do crazy stuff, but they lack the patience required to master a sport that requires complicated technique.

It's sad, but Saturday was the first time I've even seen a flatland rider since I started photographing BMX. Turns out the rider was Ryan Sanchez, a guy I actually used to ride with once upon a time. Obviously, I had to take some photos. Four frames, that's all I got before the law had to step in and shut us down. I hadn't even begun to get a feel for what Ryan was doing. Disappointing to say the least. I've wanted flatland shots for a while so I have to post some even though they suck.

This is called a Hitchhiker. He's rolling forward balancing on the front tire. In the photo it looks like his handlebars are touching the ground, they're not.

A classic old school bar ride.
