There's an Ask Slashdot running about Open Source XML Databases. It seems the poster really wants a relational XML bridge rather then a native XML database. One good open source solution for that is Ronald Bourret's XML-DBMS. Alternatively eXist has a relational backend and Xindice has a pluggable filer system that enable the creation of just about any backend you might want.

SP2N Corporation has released XMLAcl Server 1.0. Their description of this is "Access control and Administration to XML database". It sits on top of Xindice or eXist, but apparently ships with Xindice.

Xindice.Net 0.1 Released

Ken Egervari pointed out the release of Xindice.Net 0.1. This is a set of tools for working with Xindice from within Microsoft's .Net environment. Looks like it's written in C# and talks to Xindice via XML-RPC. You can get it from the project's Sourceforge page, Xindice.Net.

Windows Installer for Xindice

Walter Meyer has put together an installer to help install Xindice on Windows.

It installs a complete system including.

  • Xindice
  • XML-RPC Interface
  • Attrezzo per Xindice (including Eclipse and required plugins)
  • JRE 1.3.1
  • Tomcat service manager

I haven't tried it since I don't really use windows, but it certainly looks promising.

Wow, has it been a long time since I've posted anything. I guess you could say I've been a bit distracted. Time for some new updates.

JavaOne Java Coding Challenge

Krzysztof Kowalczykiewicz pointed out that Borland and Intel have teamed up to build a Java coding contest at the upcoming JavaOne. The challenge? Optimize the Xindice database server. It's pretty wild to see this come about.

Unfortunately, the download only works on Windows, won't even download to a Mac. It includes full Xindice source (1.0rc1) along with Alexander Schatten's Xindice browser application.

One thing I wish they'd included in the rules, "all code submitted must be donated to the Apache Xindice project after the contest". Oh well, maybe next time. Still cool to see.

Cocoon Howto

Perry Molendijk has written a short howto on using Xindice with the Cocoon XML publishing framework.

I haven't tried this yet my self, but Cocoon and Xindice are a natural fit together and over the next few months some exciting things should emerge from the two projects.
